Revive the Spirit – Aizhan Sultan
Aizhan Sultan is a singer, songwriter and doctoral researcher based in Finland originally from Kazakhstan. Her art reflects on her journey around the world and her inner political and social experiences.
This concert aims at exploring her cultural roots and decolonising her artistic identity and perception. By incorporating traditional techniques into her modern style of music, Aizhan is re-appropriating the music tradition which was at the risk of disappearing several decades ago. The concert includes solo performances of tolgau and terme - two forms of sung poetry from Central Asia - with throat singing and jaw harp improvisation. The concert will also include two duos with Finnish live electronic musician Saku Liimatainen and Kazakh folk musician Zhantu Dadabayev.
Please come and share this unique experience mixing Central Asian and Western culture into a new unique style.
Aizhan Sultanova - voice, shanqobyz
Zhantu Dadabayev - dombra, shanqobyz, sybyzgy, drum, voice
Saku Liimatainen - live electronics
